Kali Linux 2024.2 is now available for download. The new version includes GNOME 46, Xfce improvements, and 18 new security tools

Kali Linux 2024.2 has been released, a Debian-based Linux distribution designed for advanced penetration testing and security auditing. This is the second major updated release of the distribution this year. Let’s look at the main innovations of this update

    Key Features of Kali 2024.2

One of the key new features in this release is the completion of the transition to t64 . This important update fixes a 2038 issue that threatens 32-bit systems with an overflow bug that can break time calculations.

Specifically, Kali Linux has updated its 32-bit ARM architectures, used in devices such as the Raspberry Pi and some NetHunter images, to a 64-bit time_t type. This transition ensures that Kali Linux remains a reliable platform for future technologies, avoiding possible system failures due to time.

GNOME 46 desktop environment in Kali Linux 2024.2

Kali Linux 2024.2 desktops come with the  GNOME 46 desktop environment, which improves the user experience with a more refined interface and improved support for themes and extensions.

    Xfce desktop updates

The update also improves the distribution’s standard desktop environment, Xfce. It is especially useful for Kali-Undercover mode and HiDPI settings, providing a smooth and stable user experience across a variety of displays and resolutions.

    New Security Tools

As always, Kali Linux adds new security tools with every release. Kali Linux 2024.2 introduces 18 new tools, including:

    • Autorecon : A multi-threaded network intelligence tool that automates the collection of valuable network information.
    • Coercer and Mitm6 : Tools for in-depth network security testing and vulnerability detection.
    • Gowitness : A web page screenshot utility using Chrome Headless, ideal for capturing the state of web applications for further analysis.
    • Ligolo-ng : A next-generation tunneling tool that simplifies complex network settings for security assessments.

Additionally, the release fixes several bugs and updates existing tools, ensuring that Kali Linux remains a leader in cybersecurity tools.

    Expected Core Improvements

Although the anticipated Linux 6.8 kernel was not included at launch, it will be available soon. This kernel update promises improvements that improve system stability and performance, especially when using virtualization programs.

    Upgrade recommendations

Users wishing to upgrade from a previous version are advised to use the sudo apt full-upgrade command to ensure a smooth transition to the new release. If you are planning a new installation, the distribution is available for download on the website.

Detailed information about all the changes in Kali Linux 2024.2 can be found in the official release announcement.
