Recently, Ethos Technologies settled the allegations of a data breach that took place in 2022, offering affected users monetary compensation. While not admitting to any shortcomings, the life insurance firm is addressing the situation by providing restitution to impacted individuals. The reported data breach occurred between August and December 2022, revealing sensitive user information.

The breach stirred speculations that Ethos Technologies might have prevented the compromise if better cybersecurity infrastructure was in place. Affected individuals can claim a $100 compensation, with an added $100 for those part of the California subclass. The exact amount may vary based on the claims received.

In addition to the base compensation, the settlement terms outline that eligible parties could claim up to $5,000 for out-of-pocket expenses that arose due to the data breach. Also, there’s an offer of a 12-month free credit monitoring and identity protection service.

Those qualified should have been notified of the breach and its potential consequences. The period for these impacted users falls between August 4, 2022, and December 9, 2022.

To benefit from the compensation, claims should be either submitted online or postmarked by December 20, 2023. After court approval, eligible claimants can expect their funds. The approval hearing is set for January 22, 2024.

    Steps to Claim Compensation

To process your claim, ensure the Claim Form is duly filled. If a paper form is preferred, the Claims Administrator can be contacted:

    Phone: 833-933-8588
    Email: info@EthosSettlement.com
Mail: Claims Administrator, Ethos Technology Data Incident Compensation, c/o Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, PO Box 225391, New York, NY 10150-5391
Apart from filing a claim, those notified can opt out, object, or remain passive. Choosing no action implies forfeiting any compensation and future legal proceedings against Ethos, but still being entitled to 12 months of free Experian Credit Monitoring.

    Facebook’s $725 Million Privacy Compensation

Those who applied for a share of Facebook’s $725 million privacy settlement joined a massive pool of applicants. This volume is likely to influence the final compensation amount.

A record-breaking 17.7 million Facebook users made valid claims in the class-action lawsuit against Meta, formerly known as Facebook. This might be the most substantial claimant pool for a U.S. class action suit.

Of the submitted claims, 10 million were discarded—8 million due to possible fraud and 2 million as duplicates. Claims closed on August 25.

Claimants are expected to receive an estimated $30 each. Judge Vince Chhabria noted this amount might be less than what was previously estimated, primarily due to the massive influx of claims.

    Eligibility for Facebook Compensation:

Users with active accounts during the incident might receive more than those who deleted their accounts during the settlement time. Yet, even if you terminated your account, you qualify for a reduced compensation. Those who reactivated accounts within the period should include this in their claim to potentially increase their compensation.
